Foods That Cause Constipation
If you are prone to developing this health issue, in order to prevent it, it is wise to be aware of the foods that cause constipation. Limiting the consumption of constipating foods is an important part of treatment and prevention. Regardless of what the causes are, your condition can always be eased by dietary measures.
Foods That Cause Constipation
It is a well known fact that people consuming a diet, which is high in fat, refined carbohydrates, sugars and is low in fiber are more likely to develop this health issue. Let’s take a look at why.
Refined Carbohydrates
There is a huge difference in between natural and refined carbohydrates. Natural carbohydrates are found in natural and whole foods, such as whole wheat bread, whole wheat cereals, nuts, pulses, fruits and vegetables. Natural carbohydrates contain a substantial amount of fiber, which is essential for healthy digestion.
On the other hand, foods that cause constipation include items that are made with processed or refined flour. White pasta, white bread, croissants, cakes or other similar bakery items that are rich in refined carbohydrates contain hardly any insoluble fiber, which has an important role in the process of digestion. Therefore, when you eat these food items, you are not only consuming empty calories, since your body cannot utilize them, but you are putting extra strain on your digestive system, making your body more prone to developing constipation.
Cookies, Sweets and Soda Pops
Natural sugars, which are found in fruits, vegetables and honey are undoubtedly beneficial for your health and digestion in several ways. Then again, the excessive consumption of foods that are rich in refined sugars, especially in cases where the condition was caused by yeast overgrowth within the intestinal tract can lead to constipation. Yeast feeds on sugars and when your blood sugar level is raised, intestinal yeast over growth can occur, ultimately resulting in constipation. This is why sweets, cookies and cakes are considered foods that cause constipation and they should always be consumed in moderation.
Fatty Foods
While foods rich in omega 3 fatty acids are great for the prevention of constipation and the absorption of fat soluble vitamins, consuming foods containing saturated and trans fats are not only constipating foods, but they can cause a variety of serious health issues, such as heart or arterial disease, diabetes or other gastrointestinal diseases.
Trans fats are produced by a process called hydrogenation and are present in foods, such as cakes and cookies to increase the product’s shelf life. Because such bakery items containing trans fats are not only highly constipating foods, but can also harm your body in several ways, you should try to exclude them from your menu as much as possible.
Saturated fats are present in animal products, such as cheese, milk, eggs and meat. These high protein foods contain important nutrients and therefore have a very important role in our diet. In a healthy diet they should be consumed in moderation and be sure to accompany them with foods rich in natural carbohydrates and plenty of fluids.
